Stanisław Małachowski (1736–1809) był jedną z najwybitniejszych postaci polskiej historii XVIII w. Od czasu elekcji króla Stanisława Augusta w 1764 r. stał przy boku władcy, pełniąc wysokie urzędy – m.in. posła na sejmy, marszałka Trybunału Głównego Koronnego, a następnie konsyliarza Rady Nieustającej. Ukoronowaniem jego kariery był wybór na marszałka Sejmu Czteroletniego w 1788 r. Na tym sejmie Małachowski wraz z królem, Ignacym Potockim i Hugonem Kołłątajem współtworzył nowe prawo dla miast i Konstytucję 3 maja. Wtedy to, w dniu imienin królewskich – 8 maja 1790 r. – Stanisław August obdarował go złotym medalem. W inskrypcji medalowej zostały wyliczone cnoty i zasługi Małachowskiego, który już wcześniej otrzymał dwa najwyższe polskie odznaczenia – Order Świętego Stanisława (w 1770 r.) i Order Orła Białego (w 1782 r.); widnieją one na portrecie medalowym.
W latach późniejszych Stanisław Małachowski potępił konfederację targowicką, a w Księstwie Warszawskim otrzymał honorowe stanowisko prezesa senatu. Panowanie Stanisława Augusta było czasem, w którym kraj modernizowano na wielu polach. Dotyczyło to również dworu królewskiego, jego oprawy artystycznej oraz mecenatu. Wzorem władców Francji król pragnął uwiecznić swe rządy w formie szeregu medali okolicznościowych, stworzyć medalierską serię królów polskich i nagradzać medalami wybitne, współczesne mu postacie. Już w 1765 r. przeprowadzono reformę monetarną i wybudowano w Warszawie nowoczesną mennicę. Jej naczelnym medalierem został Saksończyk, Jan Filip Holzhaeusser (1741–1792), autor większości stempli monet i medali powstałych podczas tego panowania, uznany za jednego z wybitniejszych medalierów epoki. Tematy często wskazywał twórcy sam król, podsuwając wersje inskrypcji na medalach, które zwykle wybijano w trzech metalach: złocie (dla nagrodzonego i do zbiorów królewskich), srebrze i także później, w XIX w., w brązie. Narodowy Bank Polski is the central bank of the State, responsible for its monetary policy and price stability. The Bank’s functions are described in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland and the Act on NBP. NBP holds the exclusive right to issue the currency of the Republic of Poland. As the central bank, it does not provide accounts for the general public, accept deposits from or extend loans to individuals. It acts as a banker to the State budget and public sector entities. NBP also holds and manages the foreign exchange reserves of the State. Finally, it functions as a banker to banks, creating conditions for the operation of the Polish banking system. Narodowy Bank Polski is one of the most important research and analytical centres in the fields of economics and financial markets. Issuing collector items is an occasion to commemorate important historic figures and anniversaries, as well as to develop the interest of the public in Polish culture, science and tradition. On 16 January 2025, Narodowy Bank Polski issued into circulation a silver coin of the series “Treasures of the Medal-Making Art” – “Stanisław Małachowski”, with a face value of 50 złoty.

The reverse of the coin features the bust in left profile copied from the medal, on the neck the Great Ribbon with the Order of the White Eagle, on the chest the Order of St. Stanislaus, along the rim the inscription (in translation): To Stanisław Małachowski, Referendary of the Crown, Speaker of the Sejm and Marshal of the Confederation. On the obverse of the coin we read the text from the reverse of the medal (in translation): That in the exercise of his office as Speaker of the Sejm, by virtue, prudence and good example, he averted many evils from the Commonwealth and did much good to the homeland, this commemoration is offered to the noble citizen by grateful Stanisław August the King in the year 1790. Stanisław Małachowski (1736–1809) was one of the most eminent figures in 18th-century Polish history. From the time of the election of King Stanisław August in 1764, hestood at the monarch’s side, holding high offices, including that of deputy to the Sejm, marshal of the Crown Tribunal, and then member of the Permanent Council. The crowning achievement of his career was his election as speaker of the Four-Year Sejm in 1788. At that Sejm, Małachowski, together with the King, Ignacy Potocki and Hugo Kołłątaj, co-wrote the new law for cities and the Constitution of 3 May. Then, on the King’s name-day – 8 May 1790 – Stanisław August bestowed upon him a gold medal.
The medal inscription enumerated virtues and merits of Małachowski, who had already received two of Poland’s highest distinctions – the Order of Saint Stanislaus (in 1770) and the Order of the White Eagle (in 1782); they appear on the medal portrait. In later years, Stanisław Małachowski condemned the Targowica confederation, and in the Duchy of Warsaw he was given the honorary position of president of the Senate. The reign of Stanisław August was a time when the country was modernised in many areas. This also applied to the royal court, its artistic setting and patronage. Following the example of the French monarchs, the King wished to immortalise his reign in the form of a series of commemorative medals, to create a medallic series of Polish kings and to award medals to prominent figures contemporary to him. As early as 1765, a monetary reform was carried out and a modern mint was built in Warsaw. Its chief medallist was a Saxon, Jan Filip Holzhaeusser (1741– 1792), theauthor of most of the stamps of the coins and medals created during this reign, and considered one of the outstanding medallists of the epoch. The subjects were often indicated to the artist by the king himself, suggesting versions of the inscriptions on the medals, which were usually struck in three metals: gold (for the awardee and for the royal collection), silver and, also later in the 19th century, bronze. November 27, 2024 … OTTAWA – Today Canada Post issued new stamps honouring five gifted authors, each of whom brings a unique perspective to the canon of French-Canadian literature. Through their work, they offer unique observations of humanity’s flaws and aspirations, interpreting the world around them with honesty and compassion. Recognized throughout la Francophonie for their talents and accomplishments, and recipients of national and international accolades, these distinguished writers have brought French-Canadian literature to the world stage. Canada Post has a long tradition of celebrating Canadian cultural achievement and has featured numerous English- and French-speaking authors on stamps. This issue is a celebration of contemporary French-Canadian writing, emphasizing authors from francophone communities across the country. Designed by Stéphane Huot, the stamps feature illustrations by Martin Côté based on photographs of each author. Printed by Lowe-Martin, the issue includes a booklet of 10 Permanent™ stamps and five Official First Day Covers – one for each author.
Marie-Claire Blais (1939-2021) … Born and raised in the working-class Québec neighbourhood of Limoilou, Blais wrote her first novel, La belle bête, before turning 20. With raw language – new to Quebec writing at the time – the book became an instant Quebec classic. Blais’ novels, plays, scripts and poems, known for their lyricism and complexity, depict a harsh world that can also be full of tenderness and compassion. During a prolific career, she received numerous awards, including four Governor General’s Literary Awards. Jean Marc Dalpé (b. 1957) … Playwright, actor, poet, novelist and translator, Dalpé is a leading figure in the Franco-Ontarian cultural movement. Cofounder of Théâtre de la Vieille 17, which is dedicated to developing French-language theatre in Ontario, Dalpé’s writing explores the alienation of minorities. He taught at the National Theatre School of Canada and is the recipient of three Governor General’s Literary Awards. He became the first Haitian, and the first Canadian, elected to the Académie française, and his internationally translated works have won numerous honours, including a Governor General’s Literary Award. Antonine Maillet (b. 1929) … Renowned for her passion for Acadian identity, language and customs, Maillet writes in Acadian French. Her 1979 novel Pélagie-la-Charrette, about Acadians’ return home after being deported by the British in 1755, won France’s prestigious Prix Goncourt. November 14, 2024 … MONTRÉAL – Canada Post is unveiling its latest stamp, which commemorates the annual Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, also known as the “Festival of Lights.” This year’s Hanukkah stamp features an ornate 19th-century hanukkiyah (also referred to as a menorah) with a remarkable past. Originally created in Poland, the silver-plated object is believed to have been rescued from a burning synagogue in Germany in November 1938 – around the time when widespread violence erupted in Nazi-occupied territories. “In the aftermath of World War II, military authorities recovered a vast amount of Jewish cultural and religious items,” explains Louis Charbonneau of the Aron Museum at Montréal’s Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, which houses the spectacular menorah featured on the stamp. It was one of a number donated to the museum after the Second World War as part of the effort to redistribute recovered cultural and religious items to Israel and to Jewish communities around the world.
The hanukkiyah – holding eight candles and a ninth “helper” candle or shamash used to light the others – is unique for its striking sculpture of a peacock, symbolizing the faith and resilience that lie at the heart of Hanukkah. Canada Post is honoured to feature this historic artifact, shining a light on an important piece of history. Along with Hanukkah, Canada Post is proud to commemorate popular holidays for several faiths celebrated by Canadians across the country, including Christmas, Diwali and Eid. The Hanukkah stamp depicts a peacock-themed hanukkiyah standing 31.7 cm high, which was crafted by an unknown artist in 19th-century Poland. The stamp issue, designed by Subplot Design Inc. and printed by Colour Innovations, includes a booklet of six Permanent™ domestic rate stamps and an Official First Day Cover cancelled in Westmount, Quebec.

The reverse design by retired RCM Senior Engraver Susan Taylor features a full-body portrait of Lady Peace, a personification of Peace (“PAX”). Inspired by the allegorical figure atop the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Lady Peace is dressed in a flowing robe and crowned with a wreath of maple leaves and olive branches expressing a core Canadian value of peace. Her serene countenance exudes poise, strength and quiet confidence as she extends her right arm, almost as if the peace wreath she holds is an offering to all. Lady Peace stands on the shoreline and is supported by maple leaves that are symbolic of Canada, while Canada’s motto, “A MARI USQUE AD MARE” (“From sea to sea”) appears in the sky above, where the sun’s rays break through the rain clouds and form the shape of a maple leaf.
