Year 2013 was announced as Witold Lutosławski Year by the Sejm. Born on 25 January 1913 in Warsaw, Witold Lutosławski remains one of the most prominent Polish composers of all times, and his works are key to the understanding of the trends, directions and changes in the 20th century music. Drawing on the great European tradition – the achievements of Haydn, Beethoven and Chopin, and also Debussy and Bartók – Lutosławski created his own musical language, and his works are equally appealing to the intellect and emotions of listeners.

Lutosławski's compositions underwent numerous transfor-mations, from the neoclassical to a mature individual style, and the many masterpieces by Lutosławski include Concerto for Orchestra (1954), his groundbreaking work Funeral Music (1958), avantgarde Venetian Games (1961) and Trois poèmes d'Henri Michaux (1963), vocal works, piano and cello concertos or Symphonies 3 and 4 and Chantefleurs et Chantefables (Songflowers and Songfables) composed towards the end of his life.

Awarded with numerous honoris causa titles and major decorations, also Poland's highest decoration – Order of the White Eagle, Lutosławski, enjoying international fame, remained sensitive to the needs of others and those of his homeland. Throughout his life, he was involved in discrete charity, and also in important social movements, e.g. through participating in the "Solidarity" activities of the 1980s.

He died in Warsaw on 7 February 1994. In the often quoted, very accurate reflection on Lutosławski's significance for Polish musical culture, an outstanding musicologist, Michał Bristiger wrote on 8 February 1994, just after the composer's death: "His departure was very painful to us, and it was a seismic vibration of all our culture. (...) And what was the Artist to the world? What is he? What will he remain? A benchmark for the entire development of music in our century (...)". Info: Kamila Stępień-Kutera.

(...) A czym był Artysta dla świata? Czym jest? Czym pozostanie? Punktem odniesienia dla całego rozwoju muzyki w naszym stuleciu (...)". Informacja: Kamila Stępień-Kutera.

CANADIAN RECORDING ARTISTS: The Bands
www.canadapost.ca

The 4 stamps affixed to this unique collectible Souvenir Sheet feature Rush, Beau Dommage, The Guess Who and The Tragically Hip. They are part of the latest issue in Canada Post's ongoing series honouring Canadian recording artists. Designer Louis Gagnon of Paprika drew on feedback from the groups to focus on what fans recognized most about their beloved artists. The result: stamps with group shots of Beau Dommage and the Tragically Hip, alongside stamps featuring the iconic logo of The Guess Who and the fan-favourite cover of Rush's album, 2112.

The challenge was to balance history with the present to create something classic and lasting. The current band members were present in the development process and gave their input all the way through. To keep everything united, Gagnon showed each group's graphic logo and kept colour tones and textures consistent.

About the 4 bands in this series:

The Tragically Hip ... Five friends from Kingston, Ontario – Gordon Downie, Paul Langlois, Rob Baker, Gord Sinclair, and Johnny Fay – founded The Tragically Hip in 1984. The band has released 12 studio albums, 2 live albums, one extended play (EP), and 54 singles, and sold millions of records worldwide.

Rush ... has sold in excess of 40 million records worldwide, ranking third behind the Beatles and the Rolling Stones for most gold and platinum records sold by a rock band. Since releasing its debut album in 1974, the Toronto group has become one of Canada's most successful and influential rock bands.

The Guess Who ... got their start in Winnipeg in 1962 when singer and songwriter Chad Allen joined Jim Kale, Randy Bachman, Garry Peterson and Bob Ashley to form Chad Allen and the Reflections. Over their career, they have recorded 14 top - 40 hit singles, sold millions of albums, won 2 JUNO Awards and been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, Canada's Walk of Fame and the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame.

Beau Dommage ... made a strong name for itself with its self-described "folk-rock-urban" sound, rich harmonious vocals and lyrics rooted in the Québécois culture. Over the course of its existence, the band won numerous prizes and awards, including double-platinum status, Félix trophies, and a Billet d'or recognizing strong ticket sales for its live performances. It was the first band ever to receive a medal of honour from the National Assembly of Quebec.

About the Canadian recording artists series ... Through the popular Canadian Recording Artists stamp series, Canada Post makes a tribute to remarkable musical icons. Artists honoured in in the past included Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Bruce Cockburn, Robbie Robertson and Ginette Reno. Issue Date: July 19, 2013.

THE ROYAL INFANT
www.canadapost.ca

This souvenir sheet celebrates the latest addition to the Royal Family—Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. Designer Isabelle Toussaint has displayed the stamps alongside a celebratory Canadian scene from the night of the Prince's birth!  The souvenir sheet contains 2 stamps, which show a happy photo of Prince George and his parents. The photo was taken by Prince George's maternal grandfather, Michael Middleton, when the wee Prince was just 1-month old. The background image shows Ottawa's Peace Tower on July 22, 2013 when it was lit up in a baby blue glow to mark the birth.

The official announcement of the Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy—back in December, 2012—set the world abuzz. When the Prince finally arrived on July 22, 2013 (at approximately 4 p.m. London time) celebrations erupted! In Britain, there were ringing bells at Westminster Abbey, band music and military salutes. Canada joined in by illuminating not just the Peace Tower in Ottawa, but also Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls and the CN Tower in Toronto. Issue/On Sale Date: October 22, 2013. Sheet measures 122 mm x 85 mm. This OFDC welcomes the newest member of the Royal Family: HRH Prince George of Cambridge, son of His and Her Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The postmark / cancellation depicts an ornate crown and the aptly chosen city of Prince George, BC!

The OFDC contains 2 'Royal Infant' stamps, which make use of a photograph taken by the Duchess' father, Michael Middleton. The stamps show Kate holding the swaddled baby George, while standing beside William in the garden. The other images on the OFDC include a photo of Ottawa's Peace Tower and a close-up view of the young Prince. The postmark date—October 22, 2013—marks exactly 3 months since the birth!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge departed from royal tradition by choosing informal family snapshots for the first official images of their new son. The photo we chose for the stamp, taken in August, 2013, shows the royal infant at one month old. That makes him the youngest member of the Royal Family to appear on a Canadian stamp. Canada celebrated the royal infant's birth by illuminating the Peace Tower, the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls and the CN Tower in Toronto in baby blue lights. OFDC in cancelled in Prince George, British Columbia. OFDC measures 190 mm x 112 mm. Issue/On Sale Date: October 22, 2013.
